Looking at my top 10 list of websites, which are using cookies. We see Dropbox, Arteveldehs, Facebook, Icloud, Outlook, Office365, etc. These sites all need a user ID and password before you can enter the website. We are using these websites to storage files, to receive e-mail, to make online presentation or to make a professional website. These are sites that we use almost everyday and which contain a lot of confidential information. So when someone would hack these sites we would have a lot of damage. They would be able to send e-mails in your name or to enter your private files, etc. But on the other hand by using cookies they save us some time when we use the websites.
What is their purpose?
Cookies are originally designed to be a benefit for the user. So when a user want to access a site where they need a user ID and password, the site will automatically fill in the fields by using the cookies that he has saved the previous time when the user logged on. Cookies don’t only remember the user ID and password but also credit card numbers, names, addresses, etc. So cookies where originally designed to be a time-saving appliance for computer users. But websites or online search engines are using cookies also in their favor. They use it to remember the users and to remember what the user did on the website. So by doing that they can customize their website for each user.
The cookies that are listed here above are obviously used for time-saving. (Boston limited, 2014)
What are the major advantages and disadvantages of cookies in your opinion?
The major advantages of cookies in my opinion are first of all that they remember your User ID and password. So you don’t have to enter it each time you want to use the website. Another advantage is that they also remember your credit card number, address, etc. So when you have to fill in a form, the site will automatically enter your data. Another advantage of cookies is that the websites that you have visited will remember what you have visited on his website. By doing that, they can customize the website for you. For example when you use YouTube, you will find a customized homepage back.
But this last advantage can also be seen as a disadvantage. In my opinion a website remembers sometimes too much. For example when you want to go on a vacation and when you look up hotels and flight tickets, the site will remember which hotels you looked at and which flight tickets you are interested in. So when you look at the flight tickets again for instance, the prices will be higher. Because they remember that you have already looked at that tickets a few times and they know that you want that one. Another big disadvantage is privacy. They can easily sell their information that they got from the cookie to a company that is interested, etc.
